French Toast By our 2016 Summer Cooking Class

It’s not really French. Pain perdu (lost bread) was not invented in France. The recipe was traced to ancient Rome. It could be a good breakfast, or a late-night favorite.

8 pre-sliced white bread
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
Butter to grease the pan

1. Beat eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon in a bowl
2. Stir in milk
3. Dip bread in the mixture, turning to coat both sides evenly
4. Cook bread slices on the butter greased pan over medium heat until browned on both sides.
We poured maple syrup on top of our toasts, and we loved it.
